Rosario textures

Rain was light this morning so I ventured out to Rosario Beach. Pictured here are the trunk of a massive tree at the entry to the park and a closeup of one side of the two-sided Maiden of Deception Pass sculpture commissioned 37 years ago by the Samish Tribe. Sculptor is Tracy Powell. If you look closely you can see elements of the Maiden’s story: barnacles and kelp on her face and in her hair after she left her family to take up life in the sea, a decision that saved her people. Powell studied with elders before completing his work. The Maiden’s story is told on interpretive panels at the base of the sculpture.

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
