Engines roar in tribute to heroes

A busy weekend on Whidbey Island included two days of exciting hydroplane races on the Oak Harbor waterfront. “Hydros for Heroes” is an American Power Boats Association (APBA) registered national and regional professional charity racing event. It is promoted and organized by The Craig McKenzie Team Foundation, and operated with the assistance of dozens of community volunteers. According to organizers, “This event is meant to highlight the heroes in our local community to include law enforcement, firefighters/EMS, military, healthcare professionals and teachers. These Heroes make a huge impact in our community every day through their service and sacrifice.” Net proceeds from Hydros for Heroes are donated to support local heroes and to fund scholarships for future leaders. This professional racing event draws more than 50 regional race teams, which include some of the sport’s top names and approximately 10,000 fans from local and surrounding areas, as well as nationally. Races and related activities took place Saturday and Sunday, September 9 and 10. In addition to races there were activities ranging from a U.S. Navy flyover to live music and fresh food vendors. See hydrosforheroes.com for details.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
