AFD hosts annual Open House

In addition to parades and regular visits to schools, Anacortes Fire Department community outreach includes an annual Open House at the main fire station one block off Commercial Avenue. Activities at the weekend event are tilted in favor of young guests, with features ranging from ladder truck demonstrations to bouncy house and Fire Safety House. Young guests received goodie bags and plastic fire helmets. They were also invited to climb up in some fire vehicles, and some took a brief neighborhood ride on a truck. Joining the fire department were other community service organizations including Island Hospital, Skagit County CERT, American Red Cross, Anacortes Police Department and a local ham radio club. Thanks to the AFD for opening its doors to the community!

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
