2009 reminder of National Guard training

A search of photo archives provided this reminder that the National Guard makes disaster response a regular part of their training routine. This drill sponsored by the Air National Guard took place in Anacortes in August 2009. A caption read: “Camouflage gear and decontamination suits caught the eyes of passersby on “M” Avenue Friday as the National Guard site in Anacortes was utilized for a mass casualty drill. The 141st Air National Guard group of Spokane hosted the event, which also involved a Thursday drill at the naval station in Everett. Seventeen Air National Guard groups from several states participated.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
