Recalling the Navy ‘Intruder’

One of my favorite stops at the NAS Whidbey Open House last weekend was a display featuring the one-time local naval aviation star: Grumman A6 ‘Intruder.” Presiding over the display was U.S. Navy Capt. Paul Bloch (Ret), a former Intruder bombardier navigator whose career dates back to the Vietnam War. Bloch, who is still a regional War College instructor, was stationed at NAS Whidbey off and on from 1969. During the course of the day he had the opportunity to talk with many who recall fondly the “Intruder” days, including the daughter of one of his favorite pilots. Thank you, Captain Bloch, for your service!

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
