Anacortes Salmon Derby: 2007

Looking Back to AnacortesToday.com archives and the days of a local salmon derby: “Wow, what a great inaugural year for the Anacortes Scholarship Salmon Derby! More than 750 tickets sold for the two-day derby, March 10-11, in Region 7, with 125 fish caught. Lots of food and thousands of dollars in cash awards and prizes. Derby participants now wait to see if they’ve won a $70,000 boat from the 2007 NW Salmon Derby Series. Top fish was 22 pounds, 8 ounces, caught by Ronald Henning ($5,000 prize!). Kudos to Jay Field and dozens of volunteers from the Fidalgo Island Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers. Thanks to derby partners, Port of Anacortes and Anacortes Chamber of Commerce.” Go to the AnacortesToday.com search engine, type in “salmon” for more derby photos.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
