Window shopping coastal style

Sunday morning sun drew me to downtown Anacortes, where I often enjoy taking photographs of sun-splashed buildings and shop windows. This shot was taken outside of historic Marine Supply & Hardware, just a block or two from the Guemes Channel and busy Port of Anacortes docks.

Victimized by Liberace

This is Liberace, the little guy who rules the roost at my brother’s house. There are a dozen or so beautiful hens to photograph, but for some reason I opted to single out Liberace on a brief Saturday afternoon visit. I was rewarded with a peck on the ankle the moment I turned my back. […]

Community Journalism “Characters”

It was a sentimental journey this week when I joined this group of community journalism “characters” in beautiful downtown Coupeville. Instigator of the gathering was Wallie Funk, ex-newspaper publisher and one-time employer of several in attendance. Later, while our friends waited for a temporarily disabled ferry at Keystone, Wallie and I connected with Mary Obee […]

Memorial Day 2009

> As I often do, I attended the annual Memorial Day service conducted at Grand View Cemetery by members of VFW and American Legion organizations. This year, however, I also visited the gravesite of my father, Buehl Berentson (pictured above at age 18 or 19). Dad, who died in November 2007, served in the U.S. […]

Skyline, Anacortes "postcard"

>I’m toying with the idea of creating low resolution “postcards” of the area so blog visitors can send images to their friends and family. Another option for my guests would be to order a beautiful enlargement from the photographer. Yeah, that’s me. See AnacortesToday.com for hundreds of examples of my work; click on “Contact” button […]

Waterfront Festival boasts impressive roots

> (Note: The Anacortes Waterfront Festival, an event with a dramatic history, is scheduled May 16 & 17 at Cap Sante Boat Haven in downtown Anacortes)By Steve BerentsonSmall town histories suffer from a tendency toward exaggeration – but when it comes to the Anacortes Marineers’ Pageant there is abundant documentation for its billing as one […]

Deception Pass morning

>There is a reason millions of people find their way to Deception Pass each year. This is a flat-out stunning place to visit, any time of year. I shot this photo Sunday morning looking west from the Whidbey Island side of the bridge. I must say I enjoyed a brief fantasy: sharing some deck space […]

Recollections of Electrical Shop

>(Note: Yet another story from my youth, recalled during my days as a columnist for Fidalgo Magazine.)I picked up a magazine the other day and saw an advertisement for a DVD program … touted as an educational program “where virtual reality and hands-on reality come together.”When it comes to “hands-on” projects, there’s been nothing “virtual” […]

Happy boy at water’s edge

>(Note: Another sentimental journey from my period as a columnist for Fidalgo Magazine. Attached photograph is a current shot of Ace of Hearts Creek, to which I make reference in this piece. When I was a boy the creek had no name, to my knowledge). In search of escape recently from a particularly stressful day […]

Island predators

>I saw a number of bald eagles and hawks on my trip last weekend to Samish Island, but Fidalgo Island boasts its own population of predators. On Tuesday I spent about 45 minutes on March’s Point, much of that time looking for eagles. I was told by a bicyclist passing by that there have been […]
