Trestle walk sparks memories

It was a campaign photo op for Anacortes Mayor Dean Maxwell (right) and County Commissioner Don Munks (center), but the walk along the former Burlington Northern railroad trestle on Fidalgo Bay also sparked childhood memories for both local leaders. Munks, descendent of a Skagit pioneer, recalled swimming out to wrecked boats just offshore. When the tide went out, the boats became exciting playgrounds for his siblings and friends. Maxwell recalled duck hunting with his dad, and buying smelt from “Tiny,” who netted the fish just north of trestle’s end on March’s Point. Pictured with Maxwell and Munks is Duncan Frazier, who has contributed his considerable talents to Maxwell’s re-election campaign. The trestle, which is the last stage of Tommy Thompson Trail along the Fidalgo Bay shoreline, will be open today (Monday) about 3 p.m. An official opening will take place in early November.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
