An American Construction bucket crane and barge “Skagit” are at work near the Tommy Thompson Trail at the former site of the Publishers plywood mill. Many recall the crane, barge and crew from installation of new docks at Cap Sante Marina in recent months. See photo of extensive cleanup effort, upland and bay, in 2013.
Throughout the island, Fidalgo residents are getting outside for some fresh air amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are not in the high risk category and choose to do so, please take care to protect yourself and others by maintaining a safe distance. Do not touch common surfaces such as railings and the faces of […]

There wasn’t much light, so I opted to convert this photo of a heron into a “watercolor.” Our walk on the Tommy Thompson Trail included sightings of bunnies, herons, geese and eagles. We also enjoyed the aroma of wild roses.
Drawing people once again to Fidalgo Bay is the trestle portion of the popular Tommy Thompson Trail out of Anacortes. This photo was taken from the March’s Point entry/exit area.
This fountain and pond lie just a few yards from the Tommy Thompson Trail at Fidalgo Bay RV Resort.
Like many of you, I had weather-related issues with my Internet connection on the first day of 2006. In lieu of the opportunity to make an AnacortesToday.com “entry,” I sorted through some old negatives and slides. Among them was this photograph of the late Tommy Thompson, creator and chief engineer of the Anacortes Railway. I […]
A temporary construction gate that slowed these bicyclists at the Tommy Thompson Trail last weekend was removed this week, opening to traffic the cross-water trestle once used by Burlington Northern Railroad. This portion of the city-owned waterfront trail now connects historic March’s Point with Weaverling Spit and the Samish Tribe’s Fidalgo Bay Resort. A paved […]
It was a campaign photo op for Anacortes Mayor Dean Maxwell (right) and County Commissioner Don Munks (center), but the walk along the former Burlington Northern railroad trestle on Fidalgo Bay also sparked childhood memories for both local leaders. Munks, descendent of a Skagit pioneer, recalled swimming out to wrecked boats just offshore. When the […]
This has to be one of the first photos of Fidalgo Bay, as viewed from the former train trestle that has been incorporated into the miles-long Tommy Thompson Trail. I shot this photograph from the trestle on Saturday during a brief visit between Mayor Dean Maxwell and County Commissioner Don Munks. The trestle, which links […]
Work was under way Tuesday on the abandoned railroad trestle that crosses Fidalgo Bay from Weaverling Spit to March Point. The plan is to have the trestle open to the public in late August as part of the Tommy Thompson Parkway.
Shortly after noon Saturday, Anne Thompson cut the ribbon in a ceremony dedicating the 3.8-mile Tommy Thompson Parkway stretching from downtown Anacortes to Fidalgo Bay. Anne (right) is the widow of Tommy Thompson, whose dream was to run a narrow gauge railway along the northeast perimeter of the island. That dream was not realized, but […]
