Schoolchildren honor U.S. veterans

Russ Horr, father of Mt. Erie Elementary School student Ryan Horr, was a featured speaker Thursday morning at a school-wide Veterans Day assembly. The assembly was held the day before Veterans Day as school will be closed for the holiday.

Student Madison Grace Berris, daughter of parents who are military veterans, delivered a speech including a list of ways to honor a veteran. Also on hand for the event was a color guard from Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. Several dozen children at the Anacortes school have parents who are serving in the U.S. Navy. Other branches of the U.S. military were represented, and there were a number of veterans from past eras.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
