This historic mural, one of dozens created by local artist Bill Mitchell, features a 1910 Model T driven by JA Mitchell. The mural was created from a 1914 photograph taken on a family outing near Mitchell’s log boom. Look for this mural on the north wall of Red Salon, 6th Street and Commercial Avenue.
This downtown mural by artist/historian Bill Mitchell pays tribute to two Anacortes men who fought in World War I. On the left is Wallie Funk, Sr., a mural crafted after a photograph taken in France in 1917. On the right is Charles Pinson, USN, USS Chabaulip, 1917. Funk’s son Wallie owned the Anacortes American in […]
Among working artists featured at the 2005 Anacortes Arts Festival was Bill Mitchell, creator of dozens of historic murals mounted on the walls of buildings throughout this seaside community. Here Bill works on what will be his sixth dragon mural for the community. See more photos, Activities section under “Working artists 2005.”

It’s worth a stop for an up-close-and-personal viewing of Bill’s meticulous work.

Anacortes native Bill Mitchell has literally left his mark on this community with dozens of murals, most mounted on exterior walls of downtown buildings. This mural, which greets visitors to the Post Office, was created from a 1944 photo of little Dennis Mapes on Independence Day. I don’t know who handles flag maintenance.
Seems like only yesterday Tommy Thompson and his family were running the narrow gauge steam engine to and from The Depot in downtown Anacortes. Subsequent to his death, however, the handcrafted train was moved south and the tracks have been quiet since. This mural by Bill Mitchell is located on the north wall of the […]
