When it comes to lifting several tons of steel into a precise position, “the wind is not our friend.” Heavy equipment operators held a helicopter pad in vertical position Wednesday morning at Dakota Creek Industries (DCI), where another the vessel Otto Candies is under construction. Ultimately the pad was flipped over so welders could get […]
Dramatic progress has been made in recent weeks at Dakota Creek Industries, where a partnership between DCI and the Port of Anacortes will lead to additional shipyard space by next spring. Visible in the distance is the loading of a ship with petroleum coke, a refinery byproduct used in the smelting of aluminum.
The marine services sector of the local economy is strong, thanks in large part to Dakota Creek Industries. This vessel is under construction at the shipyard between 5th Street and the Guemes Channel.
As usual, the pace is hectic at Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) shipyard on the Guemes Channel. Dredging by DCI contractor Pacific Pile and Marine is taking place in the foreground for improvements that will include new docking facilities. In the background, the state ferry “Sealth” stands in drydock for maintenance. This project includes cleanup of […]
U.S. Congressman Rick Larsen (D-2nd Dist.) follows Dakota Creek Industries executive Mike Nelson up a ramp leading to the new vessel Grant Candies. A visit to the DCI-built ship was part of a morning schedule that included an on-site tour of Port of Anacortes/DCI Project Pier 1.

Crane operators worked their magic as a section of decking was lifted into place on the Grant Candies, a vessel that will reportedly be used in deepwater oil exploration activities.
I was excited by this afternoon’s sunshine, so headed out with my camera for the Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) shipyard, where progress on the vessel “Grant Candies” continues. I can spot this boat from my living room window, but hadn’t been close for a couple of weeks. Ship construction is a fascinating art.
It was Congressman Rick Larsen’s second visit to Anacortes in as many days Wednesday when he arrived to tour Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) facilities. He is pictured here reviewing shipyard improvement plans with Mike Nelson (DCI) and Port Commissioner Bill Short (center). Larsen’s arrival drew a crowd including: Port of Anacortes staff, Port Commissioners Short […]
