Catch of the day

Just minutes after catching his first cutthroat trout, grandson Chris caught this second beauty at Heart Lake. Fishing guide extraordinaire Eric Moe said the cutthroat were planted recently for a kids’ fishing derby. The two fish were the only catches of the afternoon, but the trip was a success for everyone in the boat. Shortly after Eric commented it would be nice to see an eagle, one of the majestic birds soared overhead on its way to a spot on the lakeside opposite us. We didn’t have binoculars, but we could see the white heads of three eagles on the shore. Then there were the “quiet” minutes spent waiting for a bite, minutes spent in conversation while relaxing in the warmth of the sun. All in all, it was an afternoon well spent … a memorable day on fantastic Fidalgo Island.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
