State ferry Samish to the rescue

Great job to the crew of the Washngton State Ferry Samish, who assisted in the rescue of six people and two dogs last weekend by Thatcher Pass. According to WSF, “Gale force winds had sent a wave over the bow of the distressed vessel, smashing the windshield, filling the cabin with water, and making the radio inoperable. Our crew launched a rescue boat to assist four passengers directly while the remaining two waited for further aide from the U.S. Coast Guard, while in the lee of the Samish. Once on board the four rescued people were given medical attention, food, and hot water bottles while the ferry turned and headed back to Anacortes. Thank you to everyone on board and those at the U.S. Coast Guard Station Bellingham for your life saving work on the Salish Sea.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
