Ruffled feathers

There was a break in rain, but strong morning winds and occasional gusts made life interesting for birds on the Skagit Flats Tuesday. It was interesting to watch birds of all sizes struggling to fly from Point A to Point B. I’m guessing they worked up quite an appetite.

The draw of Deception Pass

New Year rainfall let up on Sunday, January 3, a development that drew enthusiastic crowds to Deception Pass State Park: both Fidalgo and Whidbey sides. On this trip I ventured onto a trail that runs adjacent to the beach from the park amphitheater to the bridges. I have walked the same trail from the east […]

Salish Inn aims for January opening

This is an exciting season for Jagdeep Sandhu, but not just because of the holidays. Sandhu and business partner Tarlochen Dhaliwal hope to open the 46-unit Salish Inn at 907 30th Street sometime in January 2021. Sandhu, who also owns and operates the Sunrise Inn just a few blocks away, said the new hotel will […]

Squeezing in one more 2020 adventure

It was as though a “Nature Alert” went out on everyone’s cell phones. With just a handful of days remaining in 2020, I encountered dozens of like-minded folks enjoying a sunny afternoon on Fidalgo and Whidbey islands. Hikers, beach walkers, kayakers, power boaters … they dressed in layers (most including face masks) and headed for […]

Duck pond snapshots

I didn’t even have to leave city limits Thursday to enjoy time with a mix of ducks on a reed-rimmed pond. Beautiful birds.

‘Fidalgo Holds Our Hearts’

Tomorrow, December 21, is the first day of winter. I celebrated “Winter’s Eve” with a rain-free walk at the Ship Harbor Interpretive Preserve (SHIP). I enjoyed sightings of an eagle, herons, wigeons, wrens and ducks. The message from Don & Reanne Hemingway Douglas on a small, water-filled plaque captured my sentiments: “Fidalgo Island Holds Our […]

Doing battle with invasive plants

I entered a war zone Thursday afternoon when I encountered a four-person team at Deception Pass State Park, West Beach dune area. These members of the Washington Conservation Corps have been working all week at the park, pulling out invasive species in the dune/forest area east of Cranberry Lake. Among non-native plants on the hit […]

‘Cohousing’ project under way on D Avenue

Groundwork has begun on “Skagit Commons” on 4 acres near the intersection of D Avenue and 37th Street. The project website reads in part: “Households have independent incomes and private lives, but neighbors collaboratively plan and manage community activities and shared spaces. The legal structure is typically an HOA, Condo Association, or Housing Cooperative. Community […]
