Work once again at Port Pier 2

What was once a common sight at Port of Anacortes Pier 2 is now extraordinary, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. This week the “Cook Strait” is taking on a load of petroleum coke from the Shell Refinery on March’s Point, but it has been months since the last petcoke load. Jobs associated with […]

Lakeside mushrooms

Inspired by a weekend farmers market booth featuring edible mushrooms, I ventured onto a forest trail this morning at Little Cranberry Lake. I can’t identify these mushrooms, and would not try to pick them, let alone consume them. But it’s fun to locate and photograph them. Stars of the fall season in the Pacific Northwest.

Farmers Market bustles with activity

It was encouraging this morning (Sat., Oct. 17) to see lots of activity in the downtown Anacortes area, including crowds at the Anacortes Farmers Market. Did you know market memberships are available? Mark your calendar now for the annual Holiday Market at The Depot, Saturday, November 21. For details about the downtown market click here.

Coastal markers

U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey markers from the Bowman Bay, Lighthouse Point area. Grandkids and I have located similar markers on the North Whidbey side of Deception Pass State Park. I’ve also photographed a marker on an Anacortes forest trail.

Hallie’s harbor seal

From the beach, my only photo option was the top of this harbor seal’s head as it slipped by. Granddaughter Hallie, however, had scrambled to an elevated vantage point where she captured these two “underwater” images. Little North Beach, Deception Pass.

Heron & hawk

My drive to the Bayview Edison area Monday afternoon featured opportunities to photograph herons, hawks and eagles. Another beautiful Skagit day!

Regal flyover

For me, the beautiful bald eagle is always “in the news.” I was focused on an eagle perched midway up the branches of an evergreen when this beauty came onto the scene for a “flyover.” Many nests on Fidalgo Island. Within a few weeks eagles from all over the region will descend on the Skagit […]

Autumn Northwest

Fog on the water, dropping leaves give evidence of its arrival. You can smell it, feel it in the air. Crisp scenes become muted. It’s another Northwest autumn on Fidalgo Island, another glorious season of natural beauty.

Fidalgo fog

It is the season of fog, and the Northwest is still experiencing some level of smoke from wildfires to the south. Fog did not hamper the spirits of people yearning for outdoor experiences Saturday. At Rosario Beach, and again at Bowman Bay, adventurers ranged from hikers to families with children; from kayakers to scuba divers. […]
