I walked to the edge of a Bowman Bay area pond in search of a great blue heron. Instead, I was surprised to discover a number of these “red dragonflies” among the wetland population of winged creatures. The more common blue dragonfly was on hand, too, but I focused my attention on these strange insects.
I was walking on the Bowman Bay Trail Tuesday morning when I heard some squeaks that drew my attention to nearby tree branch. There I discovered this little chipmunk, chewing away on a twig. I took a photo, then another. Then the squeaks turned to squawks and the little guy scrambled high into the tree. […]
With the changing of seasons has come a dramatic drop in the level of the bird population at Ship Harbor on the west side of Anacortes. Of course my walk included sightings of gulls, herons and crows. There is also still an osprey in a nest. And I was happy to encounter the little birds […]
The annual Oyster Run event that typically draws thousands of motorcyclists to downtown Anacortes was cancelled due to the pandemic. A midafternoon run through the area revealed only a few dozen bikes.

Grandson Jake loves cars and planes, so when we spotted this Cessna Citation Mustang over the Guemes Channel yesterday morning I quickly handed off my camera so he could do the honors of “documenting” its visit. The light jet landed at Anacortes Airport. Nice shot, Jake! (Corrected from earlier misidentification as a Lear jet)
For a few glorious hours Monday we enjoyed blue skies. I ventured out to Rosario Beach and Bowman Bay, encountering a number of people who were also eager to see the sun, enjoy the fresh air. The couple pictured here at Rosario Head traveled from Bellingham. She grew up in Sedro-Woolley and as a child […]
When the smoke cleared and I got back outside, there was ample new evidence that we are in a new season. These photos were taken on the Lighthouse Point trail, southwest tip of Fidalgo Island.
What a wonderful Saturday morning, our air fresh again after a week of smoke from regional wildfires. Frustrated folks like me ventured out to hike, kayak, climb, swim, boat and fish. I saw families, couples and fishermen. I saw excited children grab their floaties in anticipation of lake swimming. I watched at least one child […]

Port of Anacortes commissioners heard from staff recently a report detailing options for improvements at Cap Sante Marina “T” Dock. Those options include three designs that would range in cost from $2-$3.4 million. A volunteer Port advisory group indicated preference for the $3.4 million option, said Port Director of Operations John Dumas. This option would […]
