Fidalgo Island ‘seahawks’

I photographed three ospreys this morning. Two never left their perches. The seahawk in flight might have been the same bird, a few hundred yards and 20 minutes between photo opps. Gorgeous birds.

‘Quiet Cove’ site cleanup in progress

The Port of Anacortes, in partnership with the state Department of Ecology and others, has begun cleanup activities as an interim action on approximately three-quarters of an acre at the Quiet Cove site adjacent to Curtis Wharf. The site once served as a bulk fuel terminal and storage facility. Work is being performed by IO […]

Beach & tide pools

I usually opt for weekday adventures with the camera. As Friday morning pushed toward noon I shared Deception Pass beaches and Rosario tide pools with a growing number of people, including a couple of fellow photographers. What else could I expect in such a beautiful “neighborhood?”

Hamilton steps down as Chamber exec

(Photo of Hamilton and former school superintendent Chris Borgen at a Chamber luncheon in 2013) The Anacortes Chamber of Commerce announced Friday afternoon the resignation of longtime President/CEO, Stephanie Hamilton. Hamilton joined the staff of the chamber in 2005 and was promoted to President/CEO in 2011. She is given credit for organizing the Spring Wine […]

Fishing a new spot

Every fisherman moves to a new spot when the action is slow. This blue heron works the rocks on low tide at Rosario Beach, “flying” a few feet from time to time across the water. Fishing was good that morning!

Wedding day at Rosario Head

I’ve encountered romantic situations at scenic Rosario Head before, but today was special. I spotted a drone from a bluff trail and upon further investigation discovered its operator was recording video of newlyweds Matthew and Jenifer Smith. Matthew anchors the live news desk mornings at KIRO-7. COVID-19 was a major variable in the selection of […]

In District 1, incumbent Ron Wesen (Republican) will face Mark Lundsten (Democrat) in the general. Lundsten led Wesen […]

One-on-one with waves

This kayaker was interested in more than a quiet shoreline cruise. He paddled parallel to the waves and then abruptly turned into them. Up, and over! Then do it again. West Beach, Deception Pass State Park.

Boats & beaches

My morning started at West Beach on the Whidbey side of Deception Pass. I then headed to North Beach, and then crossed the bridge to Bowman Bay and Lighthouse Point on Fidalgo Island. I’m guessing sunshine and a desire to be temporarily free of COVID-19 “incarceration” prompted people to head for the outdoors with boats, […]

Construction pace steady

The pace of new construction and home alterations is steady in Anacortes. There were 36 single family residential permits issued in July, compared to 29 in July 2019. Single family residential alteration permits (remodels, additions, etc.) in July numbered 97, compared to 103 in July 2019. This photo of new construction was taken in the […]

Sights & sounds of freedom

I’m always ready to grab my camera when U.S. military aircraft cross our Northwest skies. Photos here range from “Growler” electronic countermeasures jets to a “Poseidon” submarine hunter and a U.S. Air Force “Globemaster” that partners with the Navy to transport troops and cargo. Photos were taken in Anacortes, at Deception Pass State Park and […]

Incumbent commissioners trail in primary

With the next and final ballot count scheduled at 5 p.m. Monday, two Skagit County commissioners are trailing in the primary election held Tuesday, August 4. In each contested race the top two vote-getters advance to the November general election. In the case of incumbent county commissioner Ken Dahlstedt, votes at this point leave him […]
