Add this hike to your to-do list of summer adventures! Lottie Bay, accessible on a well-marked trail from Bowman Bay on south Fidalgo Island. If you’re up to it, a trail offshoot leads to Lighthouse Point.
Many folks enjoying the wonderful weather of Independence Day 2020 opted to spend time on or near the water. These photos show activity on Bowman Bay, Rosario Bay and Heart Lake.
I never cease to be amazed when I visit the perimeter of Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) ship yard on the north shore of Anacortes. It is so impressive to ponder the design and manufacturing skills reflected in these images of tugboats under construction. From flat pieces of steel to this! Kudos to all who work […]
They’re all great, when it comes to Anacortes parades, but this 2005 Fourth of July parade was special. It opened with a flyover of two “Prowler” jets from Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. Grand Marshal was Wallie Funk, my newspaper mentor and dear friend. The copper columns on the Downtown Arch were shiny and new. […]
Brief jaunts from my Anacortes home in recent days show evidence that Northwesterners are beginning to inch their way back to “normalcy” as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause restrictions on free travel. These scenes range from a young woman fly fishing Pass Lake to kids enjoying a makeshift teeter totter at West Beach, Deception […]
At low tide, Rosario Beach tide pools present a wonderful opportunity to examine sea life in a natural setting. This feature is not open to the public unless signs and a bright yellow rope line are in place. Sometimes Deception Pass Park Interpretive Specialist Joy Kacoroski is on hand to facilitate the experience. Rules of […]
I’m always excited to see a river otter. On this occasion, I came over a rise on a bluff trail to spot this family of otters on the beach below. They didn’t stay long, even though I was above them at a considerable distance. Into the water they went, swimming east toward Deception Pass.
I can’t imagine a better morning. My “breakfast time” adventure featured opportunities to photograph a number of beautiful Fidalgo Island birds, some of which offered songs. Also part of the morning but not photographed were herons and crows. Mostly little birds, the largest being the flicker.
I enjoyed watching a few morning fishing teams Monday at Heart Lake. Lots of trout, I was told, due to pandemic restrictions and cancellations of events like the annual Kids Fishing Day. It brought a smile to my face to see a family in one boat, a father and son loading their rowboat into the […]
I settled in for awhile this morning at Rosario Beach to observe and photograph a handful of Black Oystercatchers. These shorebirds can be difficult to spot against dark rocks and tidal vegetation, but my job was made easier by morning sun illuminating bright orange beaks. I enjoyed a brief period of aerial antics.Click here for […]
I shared some special early morning time today with resident wildlife at Ship Harbor.
