Cranberry Lake & environs

Typically Cranberry Lake at Deception Pass Park is crazy busy at this time of year. Given COVID-19 restrictions, however, most activity has taken place on weekends. Regardless, an early morning visit to this beautiful corner of our awesome neighborhood park yields greater opportunity for a peaceful walk. There is much to enjoy.

Beach bunnies

Prominent during this morning’s “wildlife on parade” adventure at Ship Harbor were the bunnies. They included skittish bunnies on the edge of cover, some literally crossing paths with me, one taking a bath in the sand and one tiny bunny nibbling on tender grass from the edge of a beach log. Oh, and then there […]

Morning scenes at Ship Harbor

Always a great idea to start the day in one of this community’s natural areas. Today, Ship Harbor, beach and wetlands. I was pleased to encounter a couple of new feathered friends.

Beautiful morning at Bay View’s Breazeale Center

I visited “sister city” Bay View today, across Padilla Bay from Fidalgo Island. Although the Breazeale Interpretive Center is closed right now due to the pandemic, its three trails are open. This facility, popular among students of all ages, is managed by the state Department of Ecology. It is located about one-quarter mile from the […]

Flower baskets beautify city

By this weekend the community of Anacortes will be even more beautiful than it already is, thanks to the effort of the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce, the City of Anacortes and a team of volunteers. On Friday this crew installed beautiful hanging baskets on Commercial Avenue. With the trees and floral contributions of store owners […]

Class of 2020 faces on the street

Up and down this community’s main drag, banners such as these have been posted in honor of the Anacortes High School Class of 2020. Pictured here on a pole near the Commercial Avenue roundabout are Trevor Beaner, Lorenzo Adams, Cameron Berg and Anderson. Another down the street includes Drew Monson, Kaitlin McLaughlin, Jack Murphy, Quinn […]

Walk in the rain

It was light rain, so I ventured out with camera on Memorial Day morning. A wonderful, if short, walk in the rain. Sweet aroma of wildroses, beautiful music of songbirds.

Causland Memorial Park, downtown Anacortes

Causland Memorial Park in downtown Anacortes was dedicated to local men killed in World War I, including Harry Causland. Unique stone walls and gazebo have distinguished the city block as a community gem since its construction 100 years ago. For acts of bravery that led to his death during a battle in France, Causland was […]

County leaders appeal to governor

On Friday, May 23 the Skagit County Board of Health sent a letter to Governor Inslee asking that he consider a Phase 2 variance for Skagit County. Skagit County Unified Command, mayors of all eight Skagit County cities and towns, and First Responders sent letters in support of the Board of Health’s request. Text of […]

Memorial Days Past: 2009-2019

Given that Memorial Day gatherings have been cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I put together this collection of photographs I have taken at local gatherings held in Anacortes from 2009-2019. To see more images, go to AnacortesToday.com and type “Memorial Day” in the search engine. My hope is that on Monday, each […]

Diving Deception Pass

I was pleasantly surprised on a recent visit to Deception Pass State Park to discover a group of scuba divers heading for adventure at North Beach. The divers moved in pairs to the beach, then into the water for a dive under the bridge. I was told tidal conditions were perfect: a rare opportunity including […]

On Monday morning I encountered Nigel Davies of Anacortes assembling his Hobie trimaran for a trip to Cypress Island. The beautiful kyak features both sail and pedal system.
