Unveiling of the latest photo exhibit at the Anacortes Museum drew hundreds, from teens to eighty-somethings. The occasion was the gala opening of the Wallie Funk Photo Collection, a fascinating family of photos gathered by the Anacortes-born photojournalist. Wallie (second and third photos) also celebrated his 84th birthday on Saturday, so he was joined by […]
Anacortes native Wallie Funk (center) celebrated his 84th birthday on the same day as the opening of a new photo exhibit at the Anacortes Museum. Funk, former publisher of newspapers including the Whidbey News-Times and the Anacortes American, enjoyed a Saturday evening event that drew hundreds of friends and history buffs including Skagit Valley Herald […]

Spring flowers decorate the grounds of the Anacortes Museum, a former Carnegie Library located at 1305 8th Street.
It appears from this photograph that the design of the new interpretive center at the W.T. Preston site will reflect that of the Burlington Northern Railroad Depot next door. The interpretive center will be administered by the city museum staff. The Preston is located at the corner of 9th Street and “R” Avenue.
Currently playing at the Anacortes Museum is “Roots and Pathways: A Celebration of Island Cultures.” It’s beautiful from the outside, and fascinating on the inside…
No trip to the Washington Coast is complete without a stop at Marsh’s Free Museum in Long Beach, where I visited last weekend. Sure, they’ve got seashells, kites and saltwater taffy, but the real attractions include such incredible items as “gatorman” and the two-headed calf. Gatorman, complete with accompanying tabloid “news” articles, is touted as […]
Blue skies and billowy white clouds made a great backdrop yesterday for a portrait of the W.T. Preston, a waterfront attraction under the umbrella of the Anacortes Museum. The museum Web site reports in part: “The era of federal snagboats in Puget Sound began in 1885 with the construction of the Skagit, which worked until […]
Fantastic as it is, I do leave Fidalgo Island from time to time on little adventures. Two years ago this week I took a drive to LaConner and Best Road, where I encountered beautiful snow geese. LaConner is also home to the Skagit County Museum, where a vintage windmill stands adjacent to the parking lot. […]
As anyone at the Chamber of Commerce would tell you, Anacortes makes a great “base camp” from which to launch Northwest adventures. We’re just a brief drive away from Seattle and Vancouver … and many wonderful communities along the way. One such community is neighboring LaConner, which straddles Fidalgo Island and the mainland. A “star” […]
I grabbed my camera in response to Friday afternoon’s moody skies. I was rewarded with several beautiful scenes, including a silouette of the “bird woman” statue in front of the city museum. Also pictured here are the historic Lowman house and the front entry of the city library.
Although city limits lie on the Skagit County side of the Swinomish Slough, LaConner is joined to Fidalgo Island via the renowned Rainbow Bridge. If you take Reservation Road from Highway 20, you travel through the Swinomish Reservation to the bridge. Homes pictured here lie on the Fidalgo side of the bridge. LaConner is a […]
