Generational giving

High school senior Leah Heiberg (left), already a veteran volunteer at the annual Anacortes Community Thanksgiving dinner, took on cooking responsibilities this year under the supervision of her mother, Kelly (right). Both have joined others over the past several days in preparation of a free community banquet at the Eagles (Aerie and Auxiliary 249, Anacortes). This community tradition started twenty-plus years ago at the Case Cafe, which then became the Whistle Stop Cafe. The Eagles picked up the holiday commitment after the cafe closed. Several dozen volunteers join in the effort to prepare the meal, decorate, serve and clean up. Thanks to all for this gift from the heart! See Thanksgiving 2008 in Activities section for more photos.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
