Seahawks two and out in Yakima

Anacortes High School Seahawks made it competitive Thursday afternoon in Yakima, but they ultimately lost 67-62 to Kingston on the first day of the Class 2A tournament. The Hawks boys led by as many as eight points in the course of this game, facing a team with several players who had state tournament experience from last year. Scoring in double figures were A.J. Yost, 22 points; Matt Welliver, 13; Sam D’Amelio, 10. Early Friday afternoon, Anacortes lost to Pullman 69-50, taking them out of the tournament. Senior Matt Welliver scored 23 points in the loss. About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
