A drive past Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) shipyard on the north shore of Anacortes is always interesting. Last week I had the rare opportunity to see the activity from a Guemes Channel perspective. Among vessels under construction are tugs for the federal government.

People on or around Fidalgo Bay Wednesday afternoon might have seen this unique vessel spraying with a water cannon. The custom built boat is part of Marathon Refinery’s emergency response fleet, with boats docked both at the refinery and the March’s Point wharf.
A high profile church on Commercial Avenue is coming down, victim of cost-prohibitive structural issues. The old Pilgrim Congregational Church will be demolished, with plans for a mixed use office/apartment building.

There are many great blue herons in our region, especially along saltwater shorelines. I photographed this heron tucked away in a wetland area adjacent to the beach at Ship Harbor in Anacortes.
