Shipyard from water side

A drive past Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) shipyard on the north shore of Anacortes is always interesting. Last week I had the rare opportunity to see the activity from a Guemes Channel perspective. Among vessels under construction are tugs for the federal government.

A major building renovation uncovered this iconic “billboard” on Commercial Avenue. The display on the exterior wall of the Anacortes Food Coop has since been “refreshed.”

Marathon emergency response boat

People on or around Fidalgo Bay Wednesday afternoon might have seen this unique vessel spraying with a water cannon. The custom built boat is part of Marathon Refinery’s emergency response fleet, with boats docked both at the refinery and the March’s Point wharf.

A high profile church on Commercial Avenue is coming down, victim of cost-prohibitive structural issues. The old Pilgrim Congregational Church will be demolished, with plans for a mixed use office/apartment building.

Great blue heron in wetland

There are many great blue herons in our region, especially along saltwater shorelines. I photographed this heron tucked away in a wetland area adjacent to the beach at Ship Harbor in Anacortes.
