A great blue heron relaxes Monday morning on a piling just offshore at Ship Harbor in Anacortes. Birds that seasonally occupy the numbered nests have departed, their posts taken by herons, cormorants and gulls.

Inspired by a weekend farmers market booth featuring edible mushrooms, I ventured onto a forest trail this morning at Little Cranberry Lake. I can’t identify these mushrooms, and would not try to pick them, let alone consume them. But it’s fun to locate and photograph them. Stars of the fall season in the Pacific Northwest.
