It was a great community event Tuesday when hundreds gathered for an evening of Anacortes High School boys basketball. The band played, cheerleaders cheered, the crowd applauded, and both JV and Varsity teams responded with wins. Lots more basketball action, boys and girls, to look forward to this year in a newly renovated gym. Join […]
With the start of the Anacortes High School basketball season, I was reminded of one of my favorite projects as a community newspaper special projects editor: A 16-page tabloid publication dedicated to the 75th Anniversary of Seahawk basketball! One of my favorite assignments with this 1983 Skagit Argus project was an interview with renowned high […]
With foundation work complete, the skyline is changing at the Anacortes Water Treatment Plant on the Skagit River in Mount Vernon. See the city website for details on this project.
Lest there be any confusion, the back of town crier Judy Jewell’s “scroll” features a visual aid identifying her town. Jewell, the former official town crier of Anacortes, performed a “base cry” at the first of three competitions to be held this weekend. The second cry is on 4th Street at The Heart of Anacortes […]

This photograph taken from the hill near Grandview Cemetery shows a changing Fidalgo Bay shoreline. In the foreground is Anacortes Marina. Above is Cap Sante Boat Haven, a public marina protected by a new configuration of breakwaters. A new pier will serve the small boat community from Seafarers’ Memorial Park, which also features an environmentally […]
Wide grins followed presentation of checks to top fishermen at Sunday afternoon’s culminating ceremony of the Anacortes Salmon Derby. Pictured here with the top two fish are $15,000 winner Mike Campion (left) of Bellingham and $5,000 second place winner Pat Barton of Anacortes. Campion’s fish weighed 18.96 pounds, followed closely by Barton’s at 18.74.
Salmon or not, no one loses when they choose to participate in the Anacortes Salmon Derby. A day on the water often yields views like this one looking toward Canada from the Cypress Island shoreline. Whether you catch a fish or not, the Fidalgo Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers hosts a great party under […]

It’s only a matter of time now before neighborhood kids with sleds and discs begin to populate the hill on our corner. School’s cancelled for the day, and forecasts call for continued cold, so the white stuff’s likely to be around awhile. It was very quiet when I ventured outside on the deck this morning […]
