A morning for the birds

I always enjoy a visit to Deception Pass State Park, but my Monday morning journey was extraordinary in terms of birds. There were Canada geese and mallards at Cranberry Lake; bald eagles perched in a treetop between lake and surf. There were sparrows, crows and of course, seagulls and cormorants. There was a hawk flying […]

Power vs. precision

During the course of my Monday hike at Deception Pass State Park I gathered a number of photos of damage from a recent windstorm that featured extraordinary high powered gusts. Many trees in the park, some quite large, were scraped, broken and uprooted. With downed trees on my mind, my eye was drawn to exposed […]

Wildlife adventure

One place led to the other, and before my Wednesday outing was over I had visited Rosario Head, Bowman Bay and the West Beach Cranberry Lake area of Deception Pass State Park. Had to take some photos of wildlife friends along the way. Hawk and geese surprised me with their patience.

East Cranberry dock to be replaced

Citing environmental and safety concerns, State Parks has plans to replace the existing pier, gangway and float at East Cranberry Lake in Deception Pass State Park. These members of the Washington Conservation Corps have been working all week at the park, pulling out invasive species in the dune/forest area east of Cranberry Lake. Among non-native plants on the hit […]

Morning on the water

Despite the distinct presence of smoke from eastern Washington wildfires, many opted to get outdoors Tuesday morning to enjoy some time on the water. The power boat pictured here passes west on Deception Pass, with Lottie and Bowman bays visible in the distance. Teen buddies gathered their fishing gear and headed for Cranberry Lake, as […]
