A peek at new paint, Deception Pass Bridge

Featured here are “before and after” photographs of sections of the Deception Pass and Canoe Pass bridges, currently in the midst of a comprehensive maintenance, repair and paint project under contract with the state Department of Transportation. The spans will ultimately boast a new, shiny coat of green paint, as evidenced on the east guardrail […]

Iconic NW bridges undergo facelift

Northwest icon Deception Pass bridges have been under protective shrouds on and off for months as contractors do repair and paint work for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). “The bridge” is actually two spans: Canoe Pass Bridge connecting Fidalgo Island to the center support of Pass Island, and Deception Pass Bridge connecting to […]

Bridge work continues at Pass

With bridge access from above severely limited due to the ongoing painting project, I opted to walk up from North Beach. It is fascinating to see the network of brackets, cables, chainlink and “curtains” put into place for bridge repairs and paint prep workers. Much activity has now moved south from Canoe Pass Bridge on […]

Contract workers continued work at Deception Pass Bridge today, preparing support structure for wraps that will be hung before chipping and sandblasting begins on the steel span. These images include workers at north and south ends of the bridge, about 180 feet above the water. The project requires closure to one lane from time to […]

Paint project continues on two spans

Contractors are back at work in earnest on the two iconic bridges at Deception Pass. These photos were taken on a Saturday morning. Work also continues at night, with traffic across the bridges often reduced to one lane. Note two colors on some sections of the bridge: brown color is primer coat. Spans will ultimately […]

Snow at the Pass: January 2020

Thirteen months ago today I shot this photo at Deception Pass on the way to Oak Harbor. My driver/friend was gracious enough to pull over to give me a few minutes. And today, the snow is back!
