There are many great blue herons in our region, especially along saltwater shorelines. I photographed this heron tucked away in a wetland area adjacent to the beach at Ship Harbor in Anacortes.

Ruffled feathers

There was a break in rain, but strong morning winds and occasional gusts made life interesting for birds on the Skagit Flats Tuesday. It was interesting to watch birds of all sizes struggling to fly from Point A to Point B. I’m guessing they worked up quite an appetite.

Blue heron by the numbers

A great blue heron relaxes Monday morning on a piling just offshore at Ship Harbor in Anacortes. Birds that seasonally occupy the numbered nests have departed, their posts taken by herons, cormorants and gulls.
