Local band Cascadia Groove provided the entertainment Wednesday, July 19 at the Port of Anacortes Summer Concert event at Seafarers’ Memorial Park. Serving as a backdrop to the free outdoor performance were Mt. Baker and local sailboats out for a weekly race.

Seasonal welcome banners are up at Cap Sante Marina, where the year-round level of activity grows to a peak. Saturday brought hundreds to the marina and Seafarers’ Memorial Park next door for the annual “Small Boat Messabout.”
Just arrived at Port of Anacortes Pier 2 is bulk carrier Strategic Venture, sailing under the flag of Singapore. The ship is taking on a load of petroleum coke (petcoke) from local refinery HF Sinclair.
Tugboats including the Tan’erliq and “Guard” tie up to Port of Anacortes dock on the Guemes Channel. Tugs routinely lead large ships in and out of this historic maritime region.

District 3 Port Commissioner Joe Verdoes announced last week that he will step down from his post on February 1. Verdoes, who was initially elected Port Commissioner in 2015, cited health reasons. M/V Soda Phoenix from General Steamship will dock at Port of Anacortes Pier 2 until Oct. 8 to pick up about 22,000 metric tons of petroleum coke, a byproduct of the refining process at HF Sinclair refinery. Loading of pet coke from trucks to ship is handled by local longshoremen.
It’s all about jobs. Petroleum coke shipments from HF Sinclair refinery mean jobs at the March’s Point plant as well as jobs for ship’s crew, local longshoremen and truckers. Shipments go out of Port of Anacortes Pier 2 on the Guemes Channel.
