Infant osprey

It was about 20 years ago that I took this photograph of a young osprey on the shoulder of the road near Heart Lake. These were the days before cell phones, so I had to wait until I got to work in Oak Harbor to contact the state Fisheries and Wildlife about the bird. I never learned its fate, but I was told it was not uncommon for natural causes to result in separation from the nest. The nickname for the osprey is “seahawk.” According to an article on the Wikipedia Web site, the osprey is the only raptor whose outer toe is reversible, allowing it to grasp its prey with two toes in front and two behind.

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
