Progress on parkway

Dramatic things are happening at Weaverling Spit as work continues on the Tommy Thompson Parkway Trail. This photograph was taken Sunday at Fidalgo Bay Resort, where railroad ties and tracks are piling up as a trail is created on the abandoned Burlington Northern line. This exciting project will ultimately tie South March Point Road to 34th Street, with a section of trail incorporating the railroad trestle. This phase will provide a scenic route for non-motorized travel along the eastern shoreline of Fidalgo Bay. This construction phase will complete 1.7 miles of new trail, bringing the Thompson Parkway Trail to a total of 2.9 miles.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
