McNeil prison to close

Thirty years ago McNeil Island prison, then a mothballed federal facility, was in the headlines as Governor Dixy Lee Ray prepared for a re-election bid. Uncle Duane Berentson (pictured above left in 1980 during his campaign for the GOP gubernatorial nomination) was a nine term legislator from Burlington. He advocated opening the facility as a […]

Twin spans

Deception Pass Bridge and Duane Berentson Bridge have common characteristics, other than the obvious transportation functions they serve. First, each provides a critical link to and from Fidalgo Island. Second, each “bridge” is actually made up of twin spans. While Deception Pass spans were completed together (Canoe and Deception) in 1935, locals will recall that […]

Island access

This was the view looking east Wednesday morning toward Berentson Bridge, one of two bridges linking Fidalgo Island with the mainland. The other is the colorful “Rainbow Bridge” in LaConner. A third bridge links Fidalgo and Whidbey islands at Deception Pass (actually twin spans, as in the case of Berentson Bridge).

Berentson Court

This was the view Monday afternoon from Berentson Court looking north in the newest phase of Rock Ridge residential community. Dad and Mom began purchasing property in this area back in the Sixties, accumulating property and ultimately sharing their dream with partner Tony Malo. Many Rock Ridge lots lie adjacent to city forestland near Little […]

Little Chicago

Details about the origin of this photo are sketchy, but it comes from the Berentson Family collection. Dad, who was born here in 1925, has the photo of the area known as “Little Chicago” framed in his home. Little Chicago was the nickname of a shanty town located where the North Basin of Cap Sante […]
