Hikes/walks provide exercise, relief from “incarceration” … and an opportunity to meet neighbors of the feathered variety. Some of these birds are more cooperative than others. The flicker is elusive, and the kill deer combines speed and camouflage to make things challenging. Always fun to come away with a photo or two.
A group of kayakers takes a breather on the beach just before pushing off toward Canoe Pass on the south shore of Fidalgo Island.
I was fortunate to encounter this seal on the edge of a bluff at Rosario this morning. Big! And so impressively agile under water. I had about two minutes of quality time before he departed for deeper waters.
Evening view from Mt. Erie, the highest point on Fidalgo Island. January 2008.
Fog and kayakers dominated my attention on a Sunday morning visit to Bowman Bay, but there were many others headed for beach and trails as I returned at midday. I am happy to share this beautiful Northwest “neighborhood” with so many who have suffered from travel restrictions over the past months. Here’s to the Spring/Summer […]
Families visit the tide pools at Rosario Beach. (Note park rules posted at edge of beach before following yellow lines into this area.)
I can’t tell you how many times I have looked to the sky, initially mistaking a turkey vulture for a bald eagle. I was reminded by a long distance viewing last week at Deception Pass that I had this “up close and personal” experience with a few turkey vultures in 2018. They were perched on […]
An oystercatcher steps from surf to beach at Bowman Bay, illuminated by morning sun. Southwest Fidalgo Island.
I don’t think he ever actually got airborne, but this paraglider at Bowman Bay kept lines in order and honed his kite management skills Friday afternoon.
Kayakers hone skills at Canoe Pass.
A South Fidalgo bluff trail hike yielded many opportunities to photograph native plants, including Indian Paintbrush, one of my favorites.
View of Lottie Bay, just to the south of Bowman Bay. One trail option leads to Lighthouse Point, the other to Lottie Point. Both trails offer breathtaking views of Deception Pass.
