The morning light was perfect, and the subject cooperative. A gull at North Beach, Deception Pass State Park.
A beautiful Tuesday morning at Deception Pass, as viewed from bluff trail above North Beach.
Deception Pass State Park, arguably the most popular park in the state system, is drawing big crowds once again this weekend as outdoor activity becomes a priority again for Northwesterners and visitors. This is North Beach on Saturday morning. After waiting in line for a parking spot at North Beach I didn’t even try the […]
Last week’s snow and subsequent rain caused damage resulting in the temporary closure of Deception Pass State Park. This massive Douglas Fir downed in the parking lot of North Beach demonstrates just one of the cleanup challenges facing the park crew. Countless boughs and branches litter trails and forest floor. The main park is open […]
Cleanup work continues in area parks in the wake of a mid-January windstorm that featured prolonged wind gusts. Trail walkers and park visitors have seen dramatic evidence of the storm, ranging from piles of driftwood to downed trees and blocked trails. Included here are photographs from the Guemes Channel Trail in Anacortes; Rosario Beach, south […]
Winter waves roll, crash onto Little North Beach in Deception Pass State Park.
Off season visits to area parks feature a number of perks including dramatically reduced crowds. This couple hiked the path from the Deception Pass parking area on North Whidbey to Little North Beach below.
From the beach, my only photo option was the top of this harbor seal’s head as it slipped by. Granddaughter Hallie, however, had scrambled to an elevated vantage point where she captured these two “underwater” images. Little North Beach, Deception Pass.

What a wonderful Saturday morning, our air fresh again after a week of smoke from regional wildfires. Frustrated folks like me ventured out to hike, kayak, climb, swim, boat and fish. I saw families, couples and fishermen. I saw excited children grab their floaties in anticipation of lake swimming. I watched at least one child […]
What a spectacular morning in the wake of a week of smoke-saturated skies due to wildfires. When I looked out the window Saturday morning to discover the smoke was gone, I headed for Deception Pass State Park. I wasn’t alone. These young women from Renton were fishing for salmon from Little North Beach. I also […]
I usually opt for weekday adventures with the camera. As Friday morning pushed toward noon I shared Deception Pass beaches and Rosario tide pools with a growing number of people, including a couple of fellow photographers. What else could I expect in such a beautiful “neighborhood?”
