Music filled the air over the weekend, with local artists and regional musicians hitting the island to play for Shipwreck and What the Heck Fest. Playing for Shipwreck were Annieville Blues and Spoonshine, pictured in the first three shots here. I don’t know the name of the group represented in the fourth shot. I was […]
One of the favorite phrases around here at Shipwreck time is, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” There was treasure galore Saturday as dozens of vendors hawked their wares up and down Commercial Avenue. It’s an amazing event, really. It’s mind-boggling to consider the amount of time and energy that goes into moving countless […]
Couldn’t help but think of son Mark Saturday at the car show on Commercial Avenue. Some beautiful classics shining in the summer sun. Mark starts “Hot Rod U” this week at UTI in Phoenix, where he’s studying to become an automotive technician. The engines on the classics are still an attraction to those who love […]
The “journey” is half the fun at the annual Shipwreck Day sale. The woman in the first photo here scored near the end of the day on a dried flower arrangment, adding it to a box of goodies labeled: “Shipwreck.” In the second photo, a shopper takes a close look at an antique microscope. In […]
Bill Berry of KLKI was host Thursday night of the Chamber of Commerce’s monthly “After Hours” session. The event featured food, music and prizes. Berry was surprised by Salvation Army Anacortes Corps Captain Michael Paugh, who presented the station a plaque in recognition of its work on behalf of the non-profit social service organization. Delicious […]
Andy Stewart volunteered use of his shop on 30th Street for a couple of weeks as teen and supervisors with Venture Troop 81 spruced up the classic longboat “Elizabeth Bonaventure.” Among those present Friday morning for the re-launch at Cap Sante Boat Haven were 16-year-olds Emily Zuber and Haley Fenton, who both contributed Tuesday, Thursday […]
Among local boat manufacturers is Northern Marine, Inc., which built this 127-foot yacht named “Magic.” For a sense of the boat’s size, see workers detailing the hull. The vessel is custom built, a real tribute to local designers and craftsmen.
For the past 15 years Anacortes Parks & Recreation, KLKI 1340 AM, and the Fidalgo Pool and Fitness Center have been celebrating kids and their contributions to our community. This free annual event would not be made possible without donations from Kiwanis Noon Club, Soroptimist International of Anacortes, Tesoro Petroleum Company, Northern Lights Casino and […]
This year marks the 125th anniversary of the establishment of a post office under the name “Anacortes.” Among several birthday cakes offered at last weekend’s 4th of July celebration was a boat cake designed by Mike and Annie O’Brien. City founder Amos Bowman created the name Anacortes from his wife’s maiden name: Annie Curtis.
No Fourth of July parade is complete without music, and due to the contributions of the Anacortes High School Marching Band and others, this community heard lots of patriotic songs last weekend. In addition to the high school marching band, music was provided by members of the Skagit Community Band. Music was interrupted periodically by […]
As American as apple pie is the tradition of politicians on parade. Such was the case Sunday when efforts were made on behalf of candidates at all levels. A large contingent of spirited Democrats including several incumbent legislators marched behind a John Kerry for President banner. Legislators included State Sen. Harriet Spanel and state representatives […]
It was worth waiting for. PW Murphy’s, a restaurant and lounge located at the former home of the Harbor Restaurant, opened Wednesday night to a crowd impressed by an awesome downtown makeover. It’s a welcome addition to the downtown shopping area, with restoration touches ranging from exposed exterior brick to raised ceilings and hardwood floors. […]
