Among artists demonstrating their talents at the 2011 Anacortes Arts Festival were iron artist Paul Thorne and sculptor Tracy Powell.

Among high profile naval aviators at the U.S. Naval Aviation Centennial event in Oak Harbor Saturday were retired pilots Harry Ferrier, James McKenzie and Stephen Coonts. On hand as host was naval air station commanding officer Capt. Gregory Johnston. Coonts is author of “Flight of the Intruder,” the story of a Navy pilot during the […]
What a great kickoff night for the Port’s five-week series of free outdoor concerts! A crowd of several hundred gathered at Seafarers’ Memorial Park Friday evening for a one-hour performance by the Red Hot Blues Sisters, working from a sun-bathed stage with Fidalgo Bay as a backdrop. The series continues next Friday, and for several […]
First, it’s important to note that it’s “Shipwreck DAY,” not days. Given that fact, hordes descended on Anacortes Saturday for the marine-oriented “garage sale” that dominates Commercial Avenue from early in the morning until early evening once each year. Music, food, vendors … oh, and junque galore. The talented dual instrument musician pictured here is […]
Part of the beauty of growing up in Anacortes is the opportunity for kids to “shine” on occasion as they grow up. The 2011 Fourth of July parade afforded that opportunity to dozens … it’s no fluke that the “Kids on Parade” are among the first groups to walk the Avenue.
Wow, what a parade! A beautiful sunny day, huge crowd, great parade entries … and Annie Curtis herself! Had to love the U.S. Navy flyover, too. I managed to get one decent image. More photos later.
Faces from the 2011 Fourth of July parade, sponsored by the Anacortes Women of Today. Those faces include Erica Pickett and Robin Pestarino; Town Crier Richard Ridell; Support Our Vets advocate Andy Stevens. Can someone help me with the ID on the Vets for Peace photo?
Scenes from a Memorial Day 2011 service at Grandview Cemetery in Anacortes. Flowers were placed at the grave of Alfred Lavine, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II. A ceremony at the flagpole was hosted by the American Legion Post and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). About two dozen vets stepped […]
Among mementos of my late father’s career in politics are campaign buttons, cufflinks, tie bars and commemorative pins. Dad left Anacortes in 1960 to work on the staff of 2nd Congressional District Rep. Jack Westland, a career move that led to more than two decades of work with the Republican Party. After Westland lost his […]
One element of Friday night’s 2011 Waterfront Festival Kickoff Dinner was presentation of plaques and commemorative burgees to three “Strategic Partners” of the Port of Anacortes. Port Commission President Keith Rubin presented plaques to Anthony’s Restaurant; the state of Washington Department of Commerce and Kimberly-Clark Corporation (for contributions to the cleanup of the former Scott […]
