Tsutakawa delivers sculpture: April 2008
It was April 2008 when renowned Northwest sculptor Gerard Tsutakawa and team delivered the sculpture “Annie Curtis” to its home at Cap Sante Marina. A beautiful day for placement and unveiling, with many arts community and Port of Anacortes dignitaries on hand.
Upriver park on Skagit River: 2019
Howard Miller Steelhead Park, just off Highway 20 near Rockport. This photo was taken about this time two years ago. Right now high water due to rain puts a return trip in the “sketchy” category. A county park with utilities, even a couple of cabins. Beautiful.
Shipwreck Day: 2002
Perennial favorite “festival.” The one-day Shipwreck Day garage sale in downtown Anacortes.
A flash of red
This was one of several turkey vultures perched menacingly in a tree near Lake Erie during an August 2018 drive. An impressive bird, to be sure!
Anacortes Salmon Derby: 2007
Prizes galore! Salmon fishermen from around the region descended on Anacortes for a few consecutive years as the Fidalgo-San Juan Islands Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers hosted the popular Anacortes Salmon Derby. Among board members and organizers was Jay Field.
Fog over Deception Pass: 2013
With contractors packing up equipment and closing on the finish of a two-plus-year painting project, I look forward to seeing the iconic Deception Pass spans again — shiny green and free of rigging. Maybe this month!
Eagle inspired sculpture: 2015
“Aerie,” a stainless steel sculpture by Merrilee Moore. Inspired by an eagle’s nest. Located at the roundabout on the south end of Commercial Avenue. Installed in January 2015.
Highway 20 project: July 2015
I made good use of my time on July night in 2015 when a crew stopped me on Highway 20 at Deception Pass. A much needed resurfacing project. Happy to wait…
Anacortes cannery history: May 2007
Port of Anacortes and City of Anacortes officials put a team together in 2007 to create and post colorful interpretive signs focused on businesses that once established Anacortes as “The Salmon Canning Capital of the World.”
