Skagit’s first refinery now operated by Marathon

It was 67 years ago when company executives in New York determined that Shell Oil Company should increase its investment in the rapidly growing Pacific Northwest region. There have been many exciting chapters in the story of this community’s first refinery, operational since 1955 and now owned by Marathon Petroleum. This plant’s contributions to the […]

Band of Brothers: Vet Day 2005

Celebrated World War II veteran Buck Compton was among several speakers at a 2005 Veterans Day event held at Causland Park in Anacortes. Compton, who served in the 101st Airborne Division’s “Easy Company” (506th Parachute Infantry Regiment), was honored with the Silver Star for his service. He told his audience he did not expect thanks […]

Veterans Day 2012

With Veterans Day approaching this week, I took this opportunity to “flash back” to a local event in 2012. The Port of Anacortes has hosted numerous Veterans Day gatherings over the years — a gesture much appreciated by this island community, its military veterans and those grateful for their service. This collection of images includes […]

Veterans Day song: 2009

He introduced himself as Scott Thomson, and told his modest Causland Memorial Park audience he was up most of the night working on the lyrics to his new song. The song he offered was a tribute to U.S. military veterans, several of whom were gathered at the Nov. 11, 2009 event in recognition of the […]

POW/MIA Day: 2009

Somehow I missed this year’s recognition of Americans who were prisoners of war or are missing in action. National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed on the third Friday in September. It honors those who were prisoners of war (POWs) and those who are still missing in action (MIA). It is most associated with those who […]

Community contributes to trestle rebuild: 2010

It was Spring 2010 when the community responded with more than $300,000 in contributions for the post-fire rebuild of the trestle on the Tommy Thompson Trail. A fire destroyed 300 feet of the half-mile-long trestle in 2009. Donations were made through the Anacortes Parks Foundation.

The old Ball house

The “Old Ball House,” long since gone, was once an icon on the north side of Highway 20 between Burlington and Anacortes. The late Wallie Funk, newspaper editor/publisher, once posed his two boys in the derelict farmhouse to create a seasonal card. No one injured in the making of the image.

Water treatment plant: Winter 2011

What a rare privilege it was to chronicle progress on the construction of a new Anacortes Water Treatment Plant from 2011 to 2013. The plant lies on the Skagit River in Mount Vernon, with water delivered by pipeline to Anacortes, other parts of Fidalgo Island and North Whidbey clients including the City of Oak Harbor […]

The Pioneers album: “By Request”

When family from Oak Harbor acquired a turntable, they also scored on a collection of record albums from grandma. Among them was this one: “By Request,” recorded by The Pioneers. The album cover features band members posed at the iconic tree at the top of the Loop Road in Washington Park. The photo was taken […]
