Fishermen buzz through Canoe Pass Friday morning, as viewed from North Beach at Deception Pass State Park.
Fishermen are out. On a visit to Deception Pass Park I viewed folks fishing from North Beach, boat just offshore, and bluff from the base of Pass Island. Traveling in and out of the park I saw many folks fishing lakes including Cranberry, Heart, Campbell and Pass.
There is a story in this photograph, taken Tuesday morning from Rosario Head on south Fidalgo Island. Tuesday, May 5 was the first day of Governor Jay Inslee’s “Phase One” COVID-19 response plan. This initial element of the plan allows Washington citizens to visit public parks once again after more than a month of closure. […]
Tuesday, May 5 marked the reopening of most state parks, including our amazing Deception Pass State Park. A morning visit revealed other outdoor adventurers with commendable “social distancing” skills. My morning stop included the drive to West Beach, a walk on the North Beach trail, a visit to the Cranberry Lake dock and a brief […]
This Seattle man celebrated the re-opening of state parks and public fishing Tuesday morning by visiting North Beach at Deception Pass State Park. A fish would just be icing on the cake. It was a beautiful day, and exciting to have COVID-19 restrictions lifted to some degree. Bring on “Phase Two!”

Fishing and hiking will be allowed, with continued emphasis on “social distancing” of six feet or more, and precautions including face masks and regular hand cleaning. Visitor centers, camping and other overnight accommodations on state-managed lands will […]

First things first: Wow! I love this supermoon photograph taken by Jack Hartt from Lighthouse Point looking east toward Canoe Pass Bridge! Now, more exciting news. “There’s plenty more where that came from,” as Hartt and fellow adventurer Maribeth Crandell host a blog titled: “Hiking Close to Home.” This blog features new posts and a […]
I saw this image last week on a Facebook group page dedicated to historic photos from around the state. This is a 1940 photo of the Lake Washington bridge named in honor of Lacey V. Murrow. Two facts of local interest: 1) Lacey was the older brother of famous CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow, who […]
I shot this photo recently from the center of Deception Pass Bridge, looking east. Currents swirl around the corner of Pass Island, where twin spans meet.
A partnership of park staff and volunteers is responsible for the addition of several dozen new picnic tables at Deception Pass Park. Table design gives a nod to the Civilian Conservation Corps design of the mid-30s, when Deception Pass State Park was established. Some table inside of shelters built by the CCC are constructed of […]
Rather than subjecting myself to more news about the coronavirus pandemic I chose today to visit Deception Pass State Park. Fresh air, natural beauty and safe space between me and those who chose the same outdoor adventure. Not escape, but a welcome respite.
