The surface of Bowman Bay sparkles in the sun as this pair of kayakers starts a late September adventure from the beach. This is a wonderful part of Deception Pass State Park, divided by the swirling waters of the pass but accessible by bridges.

Moving right to the top of my “Cooperative Insects” list was this beautiful dragonfly I encountered Monday at Bowman Bay. He and a number of friends were buzzing around a wetland pond when he took a break to pose for me, up close and personal.

So wonderful after prolonged days of smoke-obscured skies was the view Sunday afternoon of Fidalgo Island’s Mt. Erie, Lake Erie in the foreground.
An osprey, nicknamed the “seahawk,” heads east for a nest. With breakfast!
“Projected” onto the surface of the Swinomish Channel Sunday afternoon is a shadow of the Rainbow Bridge. To the right, downtown LaConner on the Skagit mainland. To the left, Fidalgo Island and the home of most Swinomish Tribal Community administrative offices.
Present meets past as this Forties-era biplane flies over March’s Point Sunday afternoon. I believe it is a Boeing Stearman, with Navy markings. The plane was used as a military training aircraft.
I was glad to have my camera ready when this osprey circled and then returned to its nest Saturday morning. There was lots of chatter between the nest and another “seahawk” perched on a nearby snag. Beautiful birds, fascinating to watch!

Don’t look now, but Fidalgo Island’s color palette is changing. Fall is a beautiful season, but I still have hopes for a warm and sunny September.
