I settled in for awhile this morning at Rosario Beach to observe and photograph a handful of Black Oystercatchers. These shorebirds can be difficult to spot against dark rocks and tidal vegetation, but my job was made easier by morning sun illuminating bright orange beaks. It was July 2005 when tribes from around the region participated in a traditional Canoe Journey that on this occasion led to the shores of Fidalgo Island. The Samish Indian Nation hosted this summer event, welcoming guests to their Weaverling Spit gathering place.
