If it’s specialty foods you’re seeking for the holidays, the brand new Sidedish shop in downtown Anacortes is just the place you need to be. The Sidedish, linked to The Dish kitchen and gift shop, is open Saturday and Sunday before closing again to prepare for an “official” opening in January. The shop features a […]
I had the opportunity Tuesday to take a 400-minute run through the Seattle Museum of Flight at Boeing Field. Hadn’t been there since the year the museum opened, and it’s changed dramatically. These photos are from the Personal Courage Wing, a new 88,000-sq.-ft. addition that opened June 6, 2004. Twenty-eight rare World War I and […]
Marianne is preparing for the holidays … white lights and ornaments adorn the Commercial Avenue windows of The Dish and new inventory arrives daily. She invites the community to check out the new downtown digs at a three-day, extended hours Open House November 26-28. The shop will be open until 8 p.m. Friday, 6 p.m. […]
I’ve never been a great car fan, but when son Mark is around, I find that cars are an important part of our lives. The first two photos here are from the Seattle Car Show a couple of weeks ago. We met Mark’s buddy Matt, who’s going to college in Seattle. Both had the opportunity […]
Washington Park was busy Saturday, despite a bizarre morning that featured wind, driving rain and even hail. Skies cleared in the afternoon, and by the time I got to the park in late afternoon there was lots of activity. A number of people visited the beach. I was drawn to the rocks to take a […]
In a traditional loop through town, students from Anacortes High School paraded the streets on a Friday afternoon. From musicians and yell leaders to classmates and royalty, the young folks displayed real enthusiasm as the clock ticked toward their Homecoming game. Anacortes football prevailed, with an impressive win over Bellingham.
Tonight is Homecoming at Anacortes High School, so students turned out by the dozens for the traditional downtown parade. Among them were royalty, cheerleaders, marching band and class float teams.
It was a dark but pleasant morning Sunday, so I took a trip downtown. Tethered at the Port of Anacortes dock on the Guemes Channel was the Spirit of Columbia, a Seattle-based cruise boat. Adjacent to it, in for maintenance at Dakota Creek, was the state ferry Kittitas. A mountain of pumpkins greets shoppers at […]
No trip to the Washington Coast is complete without a stop at Marsh’s Free Museum in Long Beach, where I visited last weekend. Sure, they’ve got seashells, kites and saltwater taffy, but the real attractions include such incredible items as “gatorman” and the two-headed calf. Gatorman, complete with accompanying tabloid “news” articles, is touted as […]
We had danced around the edges, but none of the three of us had ever completed the Olympic Peninsula loop. So that was our objective last week when Dad, Mom and I ventured forth after a brief conference in Bonneville. Pictured here is the view from Kalaloch Lodge on Highway 101. This photograph was selected […]
Lots of rumbles, roars, chrome and custom paint again at this year’s Oyster Run. You wouldn’t think baby strollers and motorcyles are compatible, but they shared the street for a few minutes during my visit downtown Sunday. Helmet decor ranged from skull and crossbones to horns and fur. One fur-capped biker’s fuel tank read: “Ride […]
Musicians who performed at the 2004 Anacortes Jazz Festival gave the event high marks. The Anacortes American quoted several audience members as well, asking: “How would you rate the first Anacortes Jazz Festival?” Among respondents was Gabe Palmer of Seattle, who said, “It’s fabulous. The ambience, the view, the music. I think it’s great.” Glen […]
